Halloween Costumes: A Retrospective

Now that Halloween is far enough in the past not to stir up any traumatic memories, guest columnist Brendan Murray provides a retrospective on costumes that made him think twice.

Now that we can safely say Halloween season is (finally) over, it’s time to look back and reflect on the things that made this October special. People celebrated by eating candy, watching scary movies, eating candy, carving pumpkins, going Trick-or-Treating, and eating candy. But most of all, people celebrated Halloween (and November 1st, if the parties on campus were to be believed) by wearing the best costume they could pull together on a college student’s budget. There were great ones, good ones, slutty ones, and everything in between. Here are the ones I saw and loved (or hated, or had no feelings about).

  • Iron Man/Tony Stark (some kid built a real reactor core and installed it in his chest. That’s dedication.)
  • Superman
  • Clark Kent (the poor man’s Superman)
  • Hipster (wore normal clothes because costumes were too “mainstream”)
  • Slutty Aladdin and Abu the Monkey
  • Obscure Movie Characters (“You haven’t seen American Psycho? Dude, it’s a sick movie. It’s the reason Christian Bale was chosen for Batman.”)
  • Mario and Luigi (like that hasn’t been done every year since 1983)
  • Rocky Balboa (now with inability to speak properly!)
  • Mike Tyson
  • The Guy Who’s Ear Mike Tyson Bit Off
  • Slutty Dinosaur Costume
  • Dinosaur Dressed as a Slut (huge difference)
  • Batman (costume does NOT come with a good Batman impersonation)
  • Two-Face (costume comes with a skewed sense of justice)
  • The Joker (costume comes with face paint, one blown-up hospital, and an exceedingly well-sharpened pencil)
  • Pikachu
  • Priest
  • Slutty Dracula
  • Homeless Person
  • Actual Homeless Person (I thought it was a costume until he started talking to himself and bit me in the leg)
  • Bane (You go to the gym. We get it. Now put on a shirt)
  • Slutty Can of Vegetables
  • FDR (No, you can’t use your pink blanket from Bed, Bath, and Beyond)
  • Maine
  • Ned Stark (comes with the right to say “winter is coming” when it gets cold)
  • The Idea of Freedom
  • Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
  • Atheist (comes with one copy of Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion and a condescending attitude)
  • Math 241 TA
  • Slutty Cat (or the “this is why everyone hates me” costume)
